Pattern, strand width and density
Tell the shape you see apart from the cut, styling or install behind it.
What to notice
Pattern is the path a strand takes. Thickness is how wide one strand is. Density is how many strands grow in an area. Density and scalp visibility are rough estimates, and only you know your porosity or colour history. Varied and Not sure are fine answers.
These drawings explain a term. They are not anyone’s work or results.
Pattern
Pattern describes bends and curls, not strand thickness, density or softness. Patterns can overlap. Choose Varied if different areas differ.
- Straight
- Mostly straight strands, with little bend.
- Wavy
- S-shaped bends, from gentle to more defined waves.
- Curly
- Rounded loops or spirals, from loose to tighter curls.
- Coily
- Small, spring-like coils with clearly visible rounded turns. Patterns can overlap with Kinky.
- Kinky
- Very tight, closely packed curves and coils; individual turns may be difficult to distinguish. Patterns can overlap with Coily.
- Varied or mixed patterns
- Different areas have different patterns. You do not need to choose just one.

Density
Density is how closely strands grow together, not how wide one strand is. Scalp visibility is only a rough guide.
- Scalp is easy to see
- Some scalp shows
- Scalp is hard to see
- I'm not sure
Strand thickness
Gently roll a clean, dry strand that has already shed. Choose the closest fit, or Not sure. The drawings compare width, not actual size.
- Fine
- Barely noticeable between fingertips.
- Medium
- Noticeable between fingertips, without feeling especially thick.
- Coarse
- Feels distinctly thick between fingertips.
