Tone references and undertones

How much the base covers, how it catches the light and where the colour sits. A reference photo is not a shade match.

What to notice

Saved tone is an optional reference. Undertone is the colour beneath your skin tone; finish is the look you prefer. A saved range only moves businesses that say they work across it up your results; these guides do not pick a shade.

These drawings explain a term. They are not anyone’s work or results.

A reference you choose

Your Makeup profile can use the Monk Skin Tone Scale as an optional reference, with warm, cool, neutral and olive undertones. None of them picks a foundation shade.

You can read the scale’s original reference and attribution and research paper. It was created by Dr. Ellis Monk and is licensed under CC BY 4.0.

If you save a tone range with your agreement, search moves businesses that say they work across those tones up your results for makeup, brows, lashes, skin and hair colour. It never picks a shade, and nobody reads tone from anyone’s photos. Reading this guide does not change your profile.
